Faering Cruiser Rowing Sailboat
Description
The Faering Cruiser is a 22'6" (6.86 m) wooden rowing-sailing pocket cruiser designed by John C. Harris of Chesapeake Light Craft (CLC Boats, Annapolis, Maryland, USA). It was commissioned by a customer seeking an engine-free coastal explorer for the Chesapeake Bay and its tributaries—sail when possible, row when needed, with a small aft cabin for weather protection and overnighting. The design draws inspiration from traditional Scandinavian faering (four-oared) boats—direct descendants of Viking-era small craft—with a double-ended hull for excellent tracking and rowing efficiency, combined with modern stitch-and-glue plywood construction (LapStitch™ method for strength and ease). It features a self-bailing cockpit, sliding-seat rowing (carbon fiber oars recommended for efficiency), water ballast (270 lbs in tanks under the cockpit floor for stability), and a simple lug rig (single sail, easy to handle solo). The boat is fast under sail (up to 6 knots in 12 knots wind) and rows well even in headwinds, making it ideal for exploring shallow waters, beaches, or extended day/overnight trips without an outboard.
