F-9a
Description
The F-9A is a high-performance folding trimaran sailboat designed by renowned multihull designer Ian Farrier. Introduced in 1991, it was intended as a plans-built (home or professional amateur construction) version of the production Corsair 31 trimaran. The F-9A emphasizes speed, ease of trailering, and versatility for both racing and cruising, with Farrier's patented folding system allowing the amas (outer hulls) to fold inward for road transport. Approximately 300 units were built, many as custom projects using cedar strip plank construction covered in fiberglass and epoxy. It gained recognition early on, with the F-31 (its production sibling) named Australian Sailboat of the Year in 1992. Variants include the F-9R (racing-oriented with a rotating mast) and F-9AX (extended version for increased trailering width up to 9'6").
