Express 37

Description

The Express 37 is a high-performance racer-cruiser sloop designed by Carl Schumacher in 1984 and built by Alsberg Brothers Boatworks (Santa Cruz, CA) from 1984 to 1988. This 37 ft fractional sloop was engineered for speed and agility, debuting with a podium sweep (1st, 2nd, 3rd in class) at the 1985 Transpacific Yacht Race. With its lightweight displacement, powerful sail plan, and stiff ballast ratio, the Express 37 excels in PHRF racing and coastal/offshore passages, offering exhilarating planning performance while providing surprising interior comfort. Approximately 65 hulls were produced, making it a rare and collectible classic. A Mk II version (after hull #58) added a more cruising-oriented interior (10 built). It's a West Coast legend, thriving in California and Pacific Northwest fleets, often called "the boat that sails like a dinghy."
