Description
The Evelyn 26 (also known as the Evelyn 26 OD or One Design in some contexts) is a lightweight, high-performance racer/cruiser designed by Bob Evelyn (Robert Evelyn), a naval architect and builder from Connecticut who ran Formula Yachts (USA) as a side project while working as an engineer. Produced starting around 1980, about 75 were built in fiberglass, primarily for MORC (Midget Ocean Racing Club) rule racing—emphasizing speed, planing potential, and fun handling in club-level competition. It's a classic "pocket rocket" from the early 1980s era, similar in spirit to boats like the S2 7.9 or J/24 but with Evelyn's distinctive light-displacement approach. The standard rig is a fractional sloop (most common, with a bendy mast, adjustable backstay, running backstays in some setups, and racing controls like Cunningham, vang, and tweakers for tuning the large mainsail). However, some examples (particularly fin-keel versions) were built or modified with a masthead rig for different sail plans, often to optimize for certain handicaps or owner preferences (e.g., bigger genoa, different PHRF ratings). The masthead version is less common but documented in listings and databases.
