Essex 26 Ketch

Essex 26 Ketch

Description

The Essex 26 Ketch refers to a variant of the Essex 26 sailboat — a 26-foot (about 7.9 m) fiberglass monohull cruiser with a stub keel and centerboard designed by John Cherubini and built by Essex Co. in the USA from about 1972 to 1976. The standard Essex 26 was normally offered with a masthead sloop rig, but a ketch rig option was also available from the factory, giving the boat two masts (main and mizzen) for easier sail balance and more flexible sail handling without drastically changing the hull or accommodations; however, specific production numbers for the ketch version aren’t published and it remains relatively uncommon compared to the sloop version. Construction is solid hand-laid fiberglass with lead ballast and a shoal draft centerboard configuration, and the overall design is aimed at comfortable coastal cruising and small-boat passage making.
