Ericson 41 Tall Rig

Description

The Ericson 41 Tall Rig is a classic heavy-displacement cruiser-racer designed by Bruce King and built by Ericson Yachts from 1968 to 1971, with approximately 50 to 70 units produced overall and only a handful featuring the optional tall rig for enhanced light-air performance, featuring a masthead sloop configuration with taller spars (I=50 feet, P=42 feet, J=16.5 feet, E=17 feet) delivering about 770 square feet of sail area on a lean fin-keel hull with spade rudder. Measuring 41.33 feet LOA, 29.17 feet LWL, and 10.67 feet beam, it displaces 17,800 pounds with 8,200 pounds of lead ballast for a robust 46 percent ballast-to-displacement ratio, powered originally by a 30-hp Westerbeke 4-107 diesel (or Atomic 4 gasoline, many since repowered) with 40 to 55 gallons of fuel and 80 to 85 gallons of water capacity. Its high displacement-to-length ratio of 320 ensures a soft, sea-kindly motion ideal for offshore passages, bolstered by a comfort ratio of 35.80 and low capsize screening of 1.64, while the tall rig boosts the sail area-to-displacement ratio to around 18 for respectable upwind speed despite the boat's vintage lines and narrow beam; the long, secure cockpit with high coamings facilitates easy handling, and the warm teak interior offers 6 feet 2 inches headroom in a cozy layout for four: U-galley to port, nav station and quarter berth starboard, L-dinette converting to double opposite a settee with upper pilot berth, enclosed head, and forward V-berth, prioritizing functionality and privacy for coastal or bluewater cruising.
