Description
The Ericson 33, a lightweight fiberglass racer-cruiser designed by Ron Holland and built by Ericson Yachts from 1981 to 1984 with only 28 units produced, targets IOR-era performance with its sleek fractional sloop rig (I: 39.8 ft, J: 12.7 ft, P: 43.3 ft, E: 14 ft) and reported sail area of 573 sq ft for a peppy SA/D ratio of 20.5—delivering agile handling with strong light-air acceleration (4-5 knots in zephyrs via big main and genoa), sharp upwind pointing through ~100° at 6-7 knots in 12 knots breeze, and lively reaches up to hull speed of 6.94 knots (PHRF ~129-132), though its moderate D/L of 220 and capsize screening of 2.11 make it tender in gusts, heeling to 25° early and benefiting from reefing at 18-20 knots or optional keel mods for offshore stability (comfort ratio 20.5). Measuring LOA 33.50 ft, LWL 26.83 ft, beam 11.17 ft, and draft 5.92 ft, it displaces 9,500 lbs with 3,950 lbs external lead ballast, constructed using a solid FG hull, balsa-cored deck, and Ericson's Tri-Axial Force Grid (TAFG) for lightweight stiffness, powered by a reliable 21 HP Universal diesel with ~30-gal fuel and 40-gal water tanks.
