Ericson 32 Tall Rig
Description
The Ericson 32 Tall Rig, a performance-oriented variant of the classic Bruce King-designed Ericson 32 (Mk I) masthead sloop produced by Ericson Yachts from 1969 to 1978 with approximately 470 total 32-2 hulls (tall rig as a factory option on select units), enhances the CCA-influenced cruiser's light-air capabilities through an extended rig featuring I: 41 ft foretriangle height, P: 34.5 ft mainsail luff, E: 14 ft mainsail foot, and J: 13 ft base, yielding a reported sail area of 508 sq ft (up from the standard 452 sq ft) for an improved SA/D ratio of ~19.0 versus 16.9—delivering quicker acceleration and better pointing in zephyrs (sailing in 3-5 knots with a 150% genoa) while maintaining the hull's balanced off-wind speed (6-7 knots reaching in 12 knots breeze, tacking through 105-110°) and stability in gusts up to 50 knots, though it heels promptly to 25° and may require earlier reefing than the standard rig due to the added power. Retaining the same moderate dimensions—LOA 31.58 ft, LWL 24 ft, beam 9.67 ft, draft 4.92 ft, displacement 8,800 lbs with 4,000 lbs encapsulated lead ballast (D/L 284, comfort ratio 25.2, capsize 1.88)—and solid FG hull with balsa-cored deck, it shares the Mk I's practical layout for 4-5 (V-berth, head, dinette, galley, quarter berth under 6.17 ft headroom) with 25 gal fuel and 30 gal water tanks, powered by the reliable but thirsty 30 HP Universal Atomic 4 gas engine (many repowered to diesel).
