Ericson 30-2
Description
The Ericson 30-2, a modernized fiberglass cruiser-racer designed by Bruce King and built by Ericson Yachts from 1977 to 1979 with just 45 units produced, departs significantly from the earlier 30-1 with its IOR-influenced hull featuring a longer waterline, wider beam, and transom-hung rudder for enhanced speed and simplicity, paired with a masthead sloop rig (I: 41 ft, J: 13.25 ft, P: 36 ft, E: 10 ft) delivering 452 sq ft of sail area for a moderate SA/D ratio of 16.8—yielding responsive performance with PHRF ratings around 147-162, quick acceleration in light air (4-5 knots with genoa), solid upwind pointing through 105° at 5.5-6 knots in 12 knots breeze, and balanced stability (D/L 246, comfort ratio 22.9, capsize screening 2.01) for coastal racing or family hops, though it heels to 20° early and prefers reefing by 20 knots. Measuring LOA 29.96 ft, LWL 25.37 ft, beam 10.42 ft, and draft 5.80 ft, it displaces 8,990 lbs with 4,000 lbs of external lead ballast, constructed using solid FG hull and balsa-cored deck with rod rigging and a bright interior via clear sliding hatch and fixed cabin top light, powered by a reliable 18-21 HP Universal diesel (or optional gas Atomic 4) with ~20-25 gal fuel and water tanks. Accommodations sleep 4-5 comfortably under 6 ft headroom in a practical layout with V-berth forward, enclosed head, U-shaped dinette convertible to berth, compact galley, and quarter berth, praised for airy feel and storage but noted as snug for taller sailors.
