Ecume De Mer

Ecume De Mer

Description

The Écume de Mer (translated as "Sea Foam") is a legendary French pocket cruiser/racer designed by Jean-Marie Finot (of Group Finot) in the late 1960s. It was introduced in 1968 and built primarily by Chantier Mallard (Mallard Shipyard) in France until 1979, with 1,335 hulls produced (a huge success for a small boat). Early versions used plywood multi-chine construction with a flush deck, while later ones shifted to fiberglass for durability. The design won multiple IOR 1/4 Ton Cup victories starting in 1968 and became a benchmark for fast, seaworthy pocket cruisers, with exceptional upwind performance, sharp handling, beautiful balance under sail, and good seakeeping — often called a "true thoroughbred" in reviews. It was also built under license in Japan and Australia, and its popularity stemmed from standing headroom, a dinette, toilet, and separate fore cabin in a compact package.
