Easterly 30 by compass yachts
Description
The Easterly 30 refers to two distinct but similarly named sailboats from different regions and eras, both classic coastal cruisers with masthead sloop rigs—most commonly the Easterly 30 (Smith) from Australasia, though a separate US version exists; the primary one (and the one most referenced in owner communities) was designed by Claude Allen Smith (also known as Allen Smith or C.A. Smith, a New Zealand-based naval architect with a background in racing designs like Dragons, who later developed the Pacific 38), built primarily by Compass Yachts Ltd. (with operations in both New Zealand and Australia; the NZ yard under John Maurice and Lisle Hewitt produced the "Easterly" line, while the Australian side built related models); production ran from 1969 to 1972 (with some hulls possibly completed slightly later), featuring fiberglass construction, a fin keel with skeg-hung rudder (some with doghouse additions in NZ builds, which the designer reportedly disliked), and original engines like single-cylinder Bukh or Volvo diesels (or occasional Stuart Turner gas); quantity manufactured totals around 80 (approximately 50 in Australia as per the original design without doghouse, and about 30 in New Zealand with modifications.
