Dufour 28 (2800) Tall Rig
Description
The Dufour 28 (2800) Tall Rig is a variant of the popular French coastal cruiser-racer designed by Michel Dufour, emphasizing family-friendly performance for day sailing, weekend overnights, and club racing on lakes or protected waters. It features a fiberglass monohull with a fin keel and spade rudder for responsive handling, a moderate beam for stability, and a tall masthead sloop rig for enhanced light-air performance and greater sail-carrying ability compared to the standard rig. The design prioritizes seaworthiness with a moderate displacement/length ratio for agile yet stable motion and a high ballast ratio for stiffness in gusts. Introduced in 1977 by Dufour Yachts in La Rochelle, France, the Dufour 2800 was the successor to the Dufour 27, marking Michel Dufour's continued evolution of compact, affordable fiberglass cruisers during the late 1970s boom. The Tall Rig option was offered for sailors seeking better acceleration in variable winds, with production running until 1984 and over 1,300 units built overall making it Dufour's second most popular model.
