Dufour 25 1800
Description
The Dufour 1800, often referred to as the Dufour 25 1800 due to its approximate 25-foot length, is a French fractional-sloop cruiser-racer designed by Michel Dufour and Laurent Cordelle and built by Dufour Yachts from 1979 to 1982, with around 200 hulls produced. As the successor to the earlier Dufour 25, it was marketed with the "1800" denoting its 1,800 kg displacement—a clever ploy to emphasize its lightweight feel. This 25-foot pocket cruiser offers a blend of sporty performance and practical accommodations, featuring a full-bodied hull with a square coachroof for volume, a fin keel with spade rudder for responsiveness, and a versatile fractional rig that makes it suitable for club racing, coastal cruising, or weekend escapes for 2-4 people. Available in four keel options (deep fin, standard fin, shallow fin, or lifting keel), it shines in moderate winds with good pointing ability but can feel underpowered in light air. Constructed with hand-laid fiberglass (solid hull, balsa-cored deck in later models), it's known for its solid build and value retention, though the saloon can feel cramped for taller sailors. A favorite in Europe (especially France and the UK), it developed followings in Canada and the US, praised as an "entry-level club racer" with bluewater potential when upgraded.
