Dudley Dix Didi 40cr

Description

The Didi 40CR (Cruiser-Racer) is a high-performance, radius chine plywood sailboat designed by South African naval architect Dudley Dix in the early 2000s as an extended-stern evolution of his acclaimed Didi 38. It combines the speed and seaworthiness of the Didi 38 (proven in transatlantic races like Cape to Rio) with enhanced cruising accommodations, making it ideal for coastal or short offshore passages, club racing, or family adventures with short-handed crews (1-3 sailors) or up to 6 people. The design prioritizes amateur buildability, offering a spacious interior, stable handling, and lively performance in a relatively trailerable package (with lifting keel). Variants include the original Didi 40CR and the updated Didi 40CR2 (with increased hull flare aft for more deck space and a T-shaped cockpit). As of June 2025, several plan sets have been sold worldwide, with completed builds (e.g., "Day Dream" in Australia and David Edmiston's project in Sydney) praised for their fast, forgiving nature and value, often outpacing production boats like the J/120 while costing far less to build.
