Downeaster 45 Schooner

Description

The Downeaster 45 Schooner is a rare variant of the Downeaster 45, a heavy displacement blue water cruising sailboat designed by Bob Poole and built by Down East Yachts in Santa Ana, California, from 1976 to 1981. While the standard Downeaster 45 was primarily offered as a ketch or cutter, the schooner rig was a custom option, with fewer than 10 units (out of an estimated 50–90 total 45s) built, making it one of the rarest configurations in the Downeaster lineup. Inspired by classic Maine pinky schooners, it combines traditional Down East aesthetics—clipper bow, tumblehome aft, and full-keel stability—with a schooner’s distinctive two-mast rig for balanced sail handling and visual elegance.
