D&M 22
Description
The D&M 22 is a classic 22'0" (6.7 m) trailerable racing keelboat designed by Sparkman & Stephens (design #2090) as an International Offshore Rule (IOR) Quarter Ton class racer, built by Douglass & McLeod (D&M) in Grand River, Ohio, from 1971 to 1973, with only about 50 hulls produced, making it a rare and sought-after vintage performer. Featuring a distinctive IOR-inspired hull with wide beam, bubble cabin, raised deck, raked stem, angled transom, and masthead sloop rig, it's constructed of fiberglass with wood trim for lightweight responsiveness (2,800 lb. displacement), offering good stability (39% ballast/displacement) and performance via 254 sq ft sail area, though its moderate sail area/displacement ratio (18.3) suits it for spirited club racing rather than light-air slogging. Available in fixed fin keel or stub keel/centerboard variants (with a vertically sliding skeg-mounted rudder that lifts on impact for shallow-water forgiveness, extending draft to 4.6 ft overall), it tows easily and handles well for a small crew, with a hull speed of 5.8 knots and displacement/length ratio of 247 indicating nimble yet seaworthy traits. The cozy interior sleeps four via V-berth forward, straight settee, and port quarter berth, with a starboard galley (sink, stove, icebox) and basic head, ideal for overnights but prioritizing racing cockpit space.
