Del Rey 31

Description

The Del Rey 31 is a rare, fiberglass cruiser-racer sailboat produced by Blue Buoy Yacht Co. (often stylized as "Blue Buoy Yachts") during the company's brief but innovative run in the late 1970s. Built in Torrance, California, from approximately 1978 to 1980, this model was part of a short-lived lineup that included the Del Rey 24, 50, and others, many of which were offered as owner-assembly kits to reduce costs and appeal to DIY enthusiasts. Designed for coastal cruising and club racing, the Del Rey 31 features a moderate-displacement hull with a fin keel and spade rudder, providing a balance of speed (PHRF ~150-165) and stability in 10-20 knot winds. At 31 feet, it's trailerable (with effort) and accommodates 4-6 people comfortably, with a practical center cockpit layout for weekend overnights. Production was limited—fewer than 20 hulls estimated—making it a collector's item today. Blue Buoy ceased operations in 1980 amid economic challenges, but surviving examples are praised on forums like CruisersForum for their solid build and value.
