Dehler 29
Description
The Dehler 29 is a German sailboat designed by the acclaimed firm Simonis & Voogd as a versatile performance cruiser-racer, blending competitive speed for club racing with comfortable accommodations for family coastal cruising and short offshore passages on lakes or protected waters. Introduced in 1998 by Dehler Yachts in Germany, it emerged from a partnership between Dehler and Simonis & Voogd, incorporating fresh design elements like a steep stem and upright stern for improved hydrodynamics and aesthetics during the late 1990s fiberglass evolution. The design features a fiberglass monohull with a fin keel (bulb optional) and spade rudder for agile upwind handling, a wide beam for stability, and a fractional sloop rig for efficient sail trim and good light-air performance, with a moderate displacement/length ratio for quick acceleration and a high ballast ratio for stiffness in gusts. Production ran until around 2005, with approximately 200 units built, targeting modern sailors seeking a "successful design in every respect" amid the cruiser-racer surge. Contemporary reviews, such as from Sailing Today in 2012 on the Mk II, praised its "impressive performance" and value as a "fast yet civilized" yacht, noting its forgiving nature for shorthanded use.
