Dehler 28S
Description
The Dehler 28 is a German sailboat designed by the acclaimed Dutch firm E.G. van de Stadt as a compact coastal cruiser-racer, suitable for family day sailing, weekend overnights, and light club racing on lakes or protected waters. Introduced in 1983 by Dehler Yachts in Germany during the mid-1980s fiberglass boom, it was van de Stadt's collaboration with the builder to create an affordable, versatile 28-footer inspired by offshore racing trends, targeting beginners and recreational sailors with its lightweight construction and optional lifting keel for shallow drafts. The "S" designation often refers to the sloop rig variant (fractional sloop standard). Production ran until 1991, with approximately 200 units built, reflecting Dehler's focus on value-oriented yachts. The design features a fiberglass monohull with a fin keel (spade rudder) for responsive handling, a moderate beam for stability, and a fractional sloop rig for efficient sail trim and good light-air performance, with a moderate displacement/length ratio for quick acceleration and a high ballast ratio for stiffness in gusts.
