Crown 34
Description
The Crown 34 is a Canadian cruiser/racer designed by Hein Driehuyzen (pronounced "Dry-hue-zen") and built by Calgan Marine Ltd. in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Production ran from 1975 to 1979, with 30 hulls completed. The design was influenced by IOR (International Offshore Rule) principles for competitive club racing while providing comfortable family cruising, featuring a large foretriangle, tall mast, narrow transom, and a large skeg-hung rudder for a seakindly helm (uncommon in many IOR boats of the era). After initial builds, Calgan sold the molds to GlassFab in Monroe, Washington, USA, where a few were built as the Sun 1030. The molds were later repossessed by Calgan and sold to Clark Boat Company, which produced them with modifications as the San Juan 34 (around 50 built from 1980 to 1988). The Crown 34 is praised for its balanced helm, stiff sailing characteristics (ideal for gusty Northwest conditions), and solid fiberglass construction.
