Crown 23 (Calgan 23)
Description
The Crown 23 (also known as the Calgan 23 after a 1970 rename) is a compact Canadian cruiser/racer designed for coastal and protected waters sailing. It offers a nimble, forgiving performance with a "big boat" feel that punches above its size, thanks to solid stability, a predictable helm, and a layout suited for weekend or short cruises (sleeps 2–4 comfortably). Owners in British Columbia (especially Vancouver/Okanagan areas) praise its handling in variable winds (e.g., Salish Sea conditions), light-air capability, and ease of maintenance. Designed by C. William Lapworth (famous for Cal boats) in collaboration with the builder, it was first built in 1969. It shares lineage with the Cal 24-2 (similar hull influence) but was refined for Canadian coastal use (e.g., heavier scantlings and ballast for rougher waters). The boat was produced by Calgan Marine Ltd. (North Vancouver, BC, Canada), named after Crown Street where the factory was located. Calgan also licensed other Cal designs for the Canadian market. Production ended sometime in the 1970s (exact end date unclear), with limited numbers built (exact count not documented, but low hundreds at most — relatively rare today, especially outside BC).
