Crocker 40 Amantha Cutter
Description
The Crocker 40 Amantha Cutter (commonly referred to as Amantha or Amantha-class cutter) is a classic wooden cutter-rigged auxiliary sailboat designed by renowned American naval architect Samuel Sturgis Crocker (S.S. Crocker). It belongs to a small series of similar Crocker cutters from the 1930s, known for their elegant, seaworthy lines, moderate displacement, and traditional construction suited to coastal and offshore cruising. The original Amantha was built in 1939 by Palmer Scott (New Bedford, Massachusetts) as a carvel-planked cedar-over-oak hull. It is a representative example of Crocker's work in the 35–40 ft range, blending graceful aesthetics with practical offshore capability. Sisterships or near-sisters include Roarin' Bessie (1933) and Blue Goose, sharing strikingly similar hull forms and layouts. These boats were highly regarded for their balance, motion comfort, and ability to handle a variety of conditions with a small crew. Production Quantities — Extremely limited. The Amantha itself was a one-off custom build. The broader "Amantha-class" or similar Crocker cutters (late 1930s designs) numbered only a handful (estimated 3–6 closely related hulls), making surviving examples very rare. No series production occurred.
