Cooper 416
Description
The Cooper 416 is a Canadian-built cruising sailboat (often with a pilothouse variant) designed for comfortable offshore and coastal passage-making, with a focus on spacious accommodations, good motion comfort, and reasonable performance for its size and displacement. It's praised by owners for its bright, roomy interior, dry ride, balanced helm, and suitability for liveaboard or extended cruising (e.g., Pacific Northwest conditions or longer voyages). Designed by Stan Huntingford (a respected Canadian naval architect known for models like the Maple Leaf series), it was first built in 1978. The molds were later acquired by Bayliner/US Yachts, where the design evolved into the US 42 (with some minor changes). It's a masthead sloop with a fin keel and skeg-hung rudder, offering a blend of stability, interior volume (thanks to the wide beam), and moderate sailing characteristics — not a lightweight racer, but capable and sea-kindly. Exact numbers are not widely published (limited-run design), but estimates from owner forums, sales history, and historical records suggest around 50–100 built (possibly closer to the lower end), primarily in the late 1970s to early 1980s. It's a semi-custom or low-volume production boat from Cooper Enterprises, not mass-produced like modern brands.
