Concordia 31
Description
The Concordia 31 is a classic American wooden cruiser designed in 1938 by W.B. Harris and Waldo Howland (of the Concordia Company) as an evolution from the earlier Concordia 28 (Shawnee II) one-off sloop, aiming for a quality-built, comfortable cruiser with surprising performance and seaworthiness for its size. It was built by the Concordia Company (Padanaram, Massachusetts, USA) primarily in the 1950s–1960s (with examples from 1950s to at least 1967, and some later reproductions or rebuilds), with a limited production run (likely in the low dozens, as it was a semi-custom yard boat rather than high-volume; e.g., hull #8 "Secret" built 1967). Outstanding features include timeless pre-WWII aesthetics (long overhangs, low freeboard, elegant sheer), robust carvel-planked (or double-planked mahogany) construction, full keel for excellent tracking and stability, comfortable motion in all conditions, simple yet functional layout (berths for 4–6, galley, heads), and options for sloop or ketch rig—making it a capable coastal cruiser with offshore potential (many have handled longer passages comfortably). The design balances New England workboat sturdiness with 1950s yacht elegance.
