Compass 47 Lavranos
Description
The Compass 47 (also known as the Compass 47 Lavranos) is a classic South African bluewater cruiser designed by renowned naval architect Angelo Lavranos and built by Compass Yachts / Anchor Marine in Cape Town, South Africa, primarily during the late 1970s to early 1980s (with some later builds). Approximately 50 hulls were produced, with about 7 in cold-molded plywood and the rest in solid fiberglass (hand-laid GRP with longitudinal stringers for strength), making it a relatively rare but highly regarded model for serious offshore and ocean cruising. It earned a strong reputation for seaworthiness, comfortable motion in heavy weather, robust construction suitable for long passages (many have completed transoceanic voyages or circumnavigations), a moderate displacement long fin keel for good tracking and stability, spacious interior (often aft cockpit with private cabins, full galley, and navigation station), and balanced performance under a cutter or sloop rig—prized by owners for its reliability and "go-anywhere" capability in a timeless design.
