Choate 30 (Schumacher 30)
Description
The Choate 30 (also known as the Schumacher 30) is an extremely rare, high-performance fiberglass sailboat built by Dencho Marine (Dennis Choate's yard in Long Beach, California) starting around 1981. Designed by Carl Schumacher (a respected West Coast naval architect known for fast, light IOR-influenced racers like the Santa Cruz 50 series), only about 5 hulls were reportedly produced. This boat fits the Choate/Dencho style: lightweight, stiff, and optimized for speed in Southern California conditions (light to moderate winds, coastal racing, or occasional offshore like the Ensenada Race circuit). It's a fractional sloop racer/cruiser with a big rig relative to displacement, emphasizing upwind punch and planing potential downwind—more of a "high performer" than a heavy cruiser. Owners (in limited forum mentions) praise its build quality, responsiveness, and fun factor, though it's tender (heels easily) and not ideal for heavy bluewater due to low comfort ratios.
