Choate 27
Description
The Choate 27 (also known as the CF-27 or Choate CF 27) is a lightweight, performance-oriented fiberglass sailboat built by Dennis Choate (Dencho Marine) in Long Beach, California, starting in 1976 (only about 36 hulls produced, making it fairly rare). The "CF" name (often interpreted as Choate-Feo or similar, from project partners) was common in Southern California, while other regions used "Choate 27." Designed by Scott Kaufman, it's a classic West Coast racer/cruiser from the IOR-influenced era—fast and fun in moderate to light winds, with a big rig for its size, but more racer than heavy cruiser. This model emphasizes speed, agility, and light-air performance over ultimate offshore comfort—great for coastal racing (e.g., Ensenada Race wins), club events, or weekend Channel Islands cruising (as discussed in older forums). Owners describe it as lively, responsive, and a "racer you can cruise" (vs. more cruiser-oriented boats like the S2 27). The fractional sloop rig and fin keel/spade rudder setup make it nimble upwind and quick to plane in a breeze, though it's tender (heels easily) and may need reefing early.
