Cheoy Lee Offshore 27 (Newell Cadet)
Description
The Cheoy Lee Offshore 27 (also called the Offshore 27 Newell Cadet or simply Cheoy Lee 27 in some listings), a classic small cruising sailboat built by Cheoy Lee Shipyard Ltd. in Hong Kong from 1965 onward (with production examples commonly from the mid-1960s to around 1970s, such as 1968–1970 boats frequently listed). It was designed by George T. Newell (or G. Taylor Newell, an American designer); production numbers are not well-documented but appear low to moderate (a relatively rare early fiberglass model with limited surviving examples, often restored as cherished classics). Special features include its long keel for excellent stability, tracking, and bluewater potential in a compact size, solid heavy-duty fiberglass construction (thick GRP hull, teak trim, and laid teak decks common but maintenance-intensive), masthead sloop rig, full keel-hung rudder, low freeboard for classic lines, and a reputation as one of the safest and easiest-handling small offshore-capable cruisers of its era—forgiving, seaworthy, with good motion comfort and surprising speed in a breeze, ideal for coastal, singlehanded, or extended passages.
