Cheoy Lee Bermuda 30
Description
The Cheoy Lee Bermuda 30 is a classic small offshore cruising sailboat built by Cheoy Lee Shipyard Ltd. in Hong Kong from 1962 to 1967 (one of the builder's earliest "yacht" models, with some examples possibly as early as 1961 per owner reports). It was designed by L. Francis Herreshoff (based on an adaptation/enlargement of his famous H-28 offshore ketch from the 1940s, modified by Cheoy Lee for production); production numbers are not precisely documented but appear moderate to low (dozens to low hundreds, with surviving examples often well-regarded classics in owner associations). Special features include its long keel with transom-hung rudder for superb tracking, stability, and protection in rough seas; heavy displacement for excellent motion comfort and self-righting; construction in either traditional teak planking (on ironko/yacal frames, copper-fastened) or fiberglass hull (with teak deck/superstructure and interior—later GRP models often Lloyd's certified); generous cockpit (seats 10 adults) and spacious interior (sleeps 4 comfortably, full headroom for 6 ft+, roomy cabins/galley); availability in ketch (most common) or optional sloop rig for versatile, short-handed sailing; and a timeless reputation as a sturdy, family-friendly pocket bluewater cruiser—proven seaworthy (many logged ocean passages), with effortless motion, forgiving handling, and classic Herreshoff elegance ideal for coastal, extended cruising, or singlehanded adventures.
