The Cheoy Lee Midshipman 52 Ketch (also known as the Midshipman 52 or Cheoy Lee-Wittholz Midshipman 52) is a substantial bluewater cruising sailboat built by Cheoy Lee Shipyard in Hong Kong, starting in 1977. Designed by Charles Wittholz, it's the flagship of the Midshipman series (which includes smaller siblings like the Midshipman 36 and 40), featuring a center-cockpit layout, masthead ketch rig, and a centerboard keel for versatility in shallow waters while maintaining deep-draft performance offshore. This heavy-displacement cruiser prioritizes comfort, stability, and long-range capability over high-speed performance—ideal for extended passages, liveaboard use, or family cruising. The ketch rig offers excellent sail-handling flexibility (e.g., drop the main and sail under jib and mizzen in heavy weather), and the design incorporates generous tankage for self-sufficiency.
