Checkstone 32
Description
The Checkstone 32 is a classic wooden long-keel cutter-rigged sailboat designed by JJ Bickford (also referenced as JJ Bickerstaff or Bickerstaffe in some records), with the 32-foot version developed as an evolution from his earlier Checkstone 28 for a specific customer request; it was built in small numbers—likely just a handful, possibly only one or two known examples—primarily in the early to mid-1970s (e.g., one documented hull from 1972 in Exeter, UK, by a local yard such as Lavis’s Yard or similar traditional wooden boatbuilders in the Exmouth/Exeter area), using carvel planking on traditional timber construction for robust, medium-heavy displacement cruising. Features include excellent stability and seaworthiness akin to a scaled-up Folkboat but with enhanced comfort (headroom, stove, fridge, shower potential in restorations), a long keel for directional stability and grounding forgiveness, and suitability for long-range or trade-wind passages (some owners have added square sails or made modifications like cedar strip reconstructions for weight reduction during major rebuilds).
