Charles Wittholz 11ft Dinghy/Catboat

Description

The Charles Wittholz 11ft Dinghy/Catboat (commonly called the Wittholz 11' Dinghy) is a charming, traditional small wooden boat designed by Charles Wittholz (1918–1993), a prolific American naval architect who studied at the University of Michigan and MIT, worked with legends like John Alden and Philip Rhodes, and specialized in catboats, small craft, and power trawlers over his 50+ year career. This design draws inspiration from classic New England catboats and Whitehalls, featuring a beamy yet fine-lined hull with a round bottom, sweeping sheer, tumblehome stem, nearly wineglass transom, and barn-door rudder—making it a true catboat in miniature, optimized for protected waters like lakes, harbors, or as a tender. It's versatile: excellent under oars (light and efficient rowing), fun to sail with its gaff rig (or optional lug), and adaptable for a small outboard. Wittholz tailored the plans for home builders, using cold-molded construction (no frames, easier than steam-bending), with lofting optional and intermediate skill level.
