Catalina 22 Mk Ii

Description

The Catalina 22 Mk II is an upgraded variant of the iconic Catalina 22 trailerable sailboat, designed by Frank V. Butler and produced by Catalina Yachts from 1995 to around 2004 (though some sources extend to 2009). It builds on the success of the original Catalina 22, which has sold over 15,000 units since 1969 and is one of the most popular trailer-sailors ever built, inducted into the American Sailboat Hall of Fame in 1995 for its role in popularizing pocket-cruising. The Mk II addresses some limitations of earlier models (like the 1986 "New Design") by offering a wider hull and cabin for improved comfort, a more modern interior layout, and options for fixed or swing keels to balance performance and shallow-water access. Key changes include revisions to the hull above the waterline, an enlarged deck and cockpit, smoked plexiglass port lights (replacing aluminum-trimmed ones), a pop-top companionway for extra headroom, and the elimination of exterior teak for lower maintenance. It's heavier and roomier than the original but retains the same basic hull shape, making it better suited for family cruising and day sailing than one-design racing (where lighter original models or the later 2004 Catalina 22 Sport are preferred). Production was limited compared to predecessors (fewer than 1,000 units), and it's out of production but widely available used for $6,000–$15,000, depending on condition. Catalina Yachts still supports parts through dealers like Catalina Direct, and there's an active owners' association for racing and maintenance tips. 2290 lbs. Disp. 700 lbs. Ballast fin keel. 19'4" LWL. 8'4" Beam. 3'6" Draft Fin Keel. 2'6" Draft wing keel. 2' Draft CB up. 5' Draft CB Down. Mark II models changed interior only. One-design integrity is preserved.
