Caledonia Yawl - Gaff Head Sprit Boom Main
Description
The Caledonia Yawl is a timeless Scottish-inspired open wooden daysailer, tender, and pocket cruiser yawl designed by Iain Oughtred, drawing from traditional Shetland fishing boats for its elegant double-ended lines and exceptional seaworthiness. Plans were first published in 1990 by The Chestnut Canoe Company (now via WoodenBoat), with glued lapstrake plywood construction making it accessible for amateur builders; over 300 hulls have been completed worldwide. At 19.5 feet, it's highly trailerable (under 1,000 lbs rigged), versatile for rowing (up to 4 oars), single-handing under sail, or camping aboard for two, excelling in coastal bays, lakes, or light offshore use with a balanced yawl rig for easy handling in 10–20 knots. Its lightweight yet sturdy build offers a dry, responsive ride, though as a traditional open boat, it's best for fair weather and requires varnishing maintenance.
