Cal 36 Tall

Description

The Cal 36 Tall Rig is a classic American racer-cruiser sailboat designed by C. William Lapworth. Built by Jensen Marine (Cal Boats) from 1966 to 1973, approximately 200 hulls were produced overall, with the tall rig variant (introduced later in production) offering enhanced light-air performance through a taller mast and increased sail area (~10% more than standard). It features a lightweight fin keel with spade rudder for agile handling, solid hand-laid fiberglass construction, and a masthead sloop rig suited to coastal racing, club fleets, or family cruising. Known for its speed off the wind, balanced motion in 10–20 knots, and seaworthiness on short passages, it's a timeless design with a forgiving nature.
