Cal 35 MK II
Description
The Cal 35 MK II is a classic American racer-cruiser sailboat designed by C. William Lapworth as an updated iteration of the original Cal 35, emphasizing improved interior layout and cruising comfort while retaining agile performance. Built by Jensen Marine (Cal Yachts) from 1978 to 1984 (with the MK II specifically from ~1981), approximately 200 hulls were produced across the Cal 35 series, with the MK II representing a significant portion. It features a moderate-displacement fin keel with spade rudder for responsive handling, hand-laid solid fiberglass construction (balsa-cored deck), and a masthead sloop rig suited to coastal racing, club fleets, or family passages. Known for its balance in 10–20 knots, stiff ride due to high ballast ratio, and seaworthiness on short offshore legs, it's a forgiving design for its era.
