Cal 34
Description
The Cal 34 is a classic American racer-cruiser sailboat designed by C. William Lapworth as a smaller, more accessible sibling to the legendary Cal 40. Built by Jensen Marine (Cal Yachts) from 1968 to 1975, approximately 347 hulls were produced for this original mark (with later variants like the Cal 2-34 and Cal 34-III extending production to 1979 and adding ~150 more total). It features a light-displacement fin keel with spade rudder for lively handling, hand-laid solid fiberglass construction (balsa-cored deck in later models), and a low-aspect masthead sloop rig suited to coastal racing, club fleets, or family weekends. Praised for its speed off the wind, balanced motion in 10–20 knots, and surprising interior volume, it's an entry-level bluewater candidate with a forgiving nature.
