Cal 31 1981 And Earlier
Description
The Cal 31 is an American cruiser-racer sailboat designed by C. Raymond Hunt Associates and built by Lear Siegler Marine (under the Cal Boats banner) from 1979 to 1983. It was introduced as a modern evolution of earlier Cal designs, targeting coastal cruising and club racing under PHRF (typical rating ~150-162). The boat combines performance, comfort, and seaworthiness for small families or couples, featuring a solid fiberglass hull, a fixed fin keel, and a spade rudder. Approximately 100-150 units were built, making it relatively rare compared to earlier models like the Cal 29 or Cal 2-30. It’s praised for its balanced handling, spacious interior, and quality construction but requires maintenance on aging systems like the Yanmar diesel engine, rigging, and balsa-cored deck. Used prices range from $15,000 to $30,000 depending on condition, with many boats upgraded with modern electronics or sails.

Disclaimer. Boats are not all the same -- even when produced in the same factory of the same model. Sailrite does its best to publish accurate dimensions, but we often find it worthwhile to have our customers measure their boats carefully before we produce kits for them. You should take the same precautions, especially when the data is not from Sailrite.
