Description
The Byte is a lightweight, one-design racing dinghy designed by Canadian naval architect Ian Bruce in 1988, who also created the Laser. It's a single-handed performance boat tailored for lighter sailors (optimum weight 100-145 lbs. / 45-66 kg), serving as an accessible step up from the Optimist or a gentler alternative to the high-powered Laser. With a simple cat rig and forgiving hull, it's ideal for juniors, women, or adults seeking fun, competitive racing or casual day sails on lakes, rivers, or protected coastal waters. The original Byte features a zippered luff sail for easy hoisting, while the updated Byte CII (introduced 2004) offers a modern 2:1 halyard system and carbon extensions for better control. Recognized by World Sailing, the Byte CII is one of two boats (alongside the Laser Radial) for the Youth Sailing World Championships' Girls' One-Person Dinghy event. Over 2,000 units have been built, with active class associations in North America, Europe, and Australia fostering regattas and training. As of October 2025, it's produced by Performance Sailcraft Australasia (PSA) and dealers like Hartley Boats, praised for its simplicity, speed, and low cost—perfect for building confidence in lighter helms.
