Buzzards Bay 19

Buzzards Bay 19

Description

The Buzzards Bay 19 (often listed as an 18'8"–19' LOA boat) is a classic gaff-rigged sloop inspired by the shallow-draft, seaworthy designs suitable for the choppy waters of Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts. Unlike the larger Herreshoff Buzzards Bay 25, this is a smaller, more pocket-sized daysailer/weekender, typically built in wood (carvel or lapstrake planking) and emphasizing simplicity, stability, and ease of handling. It's not a direct Nathanael G. Herreshoff design (though Herreshoff did have related smaller Buzzards Bay classes like the BB15 or BB18 from the early 1900s). The most commonly referenced "Buzzards Bay 19" is a design by the renowned wooden boat designer R.D. "Pete" Culler (1920–1978), considered one of his finest and final works. Culler's version draws heavy inspiration from traditional Herreshoff-style hulls—graceful sheer, moderate displacement, and excellent performance in a breeze—but scaled down for easier building, trailering, and single-handing.
