Buccaneer 277
Description
The Buccaneer 277 is a 27-foot coastal cruising sailboat produced by Buccaneer Yachts, a division of Bayliner, from 1978 to 1980. Designed as an affordable family cruiser, it emphasizes interior comfort and ease of handling for weekend sails or short coastal passages. A variant of the Buccaneer 272, it features an inboard diesel engine (typically a Volvo MD7A) for enhanced reliability compared to the outboard-powered 272. The hull, derived from the Doug Peterson-designed Chaser 27 (an IOR 1/2-ton racer), was modified with a cruising-oriented deck and cabin to prioritize space over speed. With a wide beam for stability and a layout sleeping 4–5, it’s suited for inland lakes or protected bays but critiqued for its dated, high-sided aesthetics and variable build quality from Bayliner’s high-volume production. Approximately 50–100 units were built, making it a rare but budget-friendly option in the used market.
