Bolger 31 Folding Schooner

Bolger 31 Folding Schooner

Description

The Bolger 31 Folding Schooner is one of the most distinctive and ingenious designs by the legendary American boat designer Philip C. Bolger, known for his unconventional yet thoroughly practical small craft. Designed in the early 1970s, the 31‑foot Folding Schooner exemplifies Bolger’s experimental spirit—a trailerable, folding sailing vessel that could be launched and recovered with ease, yet still provide big‑boat presence and performance under sail. The design features two folding hull sides that pivot upward amidships, allowing the boat’s beam to collapse for trailering. When unfolded and secured, the result is a full‑beam schooner with the aesthetic of a classic working sailboat married to the practicality of modern mobility. Bolger paired this with his characteristic simplified flat‑panel construction, intended for plywood and epoxy amateur boatbuilding.
