Beneteau 40 (Oceanis 40)
Description
The Beneteau 40 (also known as the Oceanis 40 outside the US) is a popular French production cruising sloop designed by Berret-Racoupeau and built by Beneteau in Marion, South Carolina, USA, and Vendée, France. Produced from 2007 to 2011, approximately 400 examples were constructed, emphasizing spacious accommodations, light-air performance, and value-oriented cruising for families or couples. This fractional sloop features a fiberglass hull with balsa-cored deck, fin keel with bulb (optional shoal draft), spade rudder, raked stem, and wide transom for stability and cockpit space. The modern interior (by Nauta Design) sleeps 4–6 in 2- or 3-cabin layouts (V-berth forward, saloon settees, U-galley, nav station, and enclosed head with shower), with moabi mahogany trim, ample headroom (~6.4 ft), and good ventilation. Known for responsive handling (high SA/D for quick acceleration), comfortable motion (moderate comfort ratio), and easy sail-handling with in-mast furling main and roller genoa, it's ideal for coastal or charter use but tender in heavy gusts (capsize ~1.95). A Moorings 41.3 charter variant exists with similar specs.
