Beach Pea 15

Description

The Beach Pea 15 is the extended version of Doug Hylan's acclaimed 13' Beach Pea, a modern take on the classic Maine peapod—a double-ended, lapstrake workboat from the 1870s Penobscot Bay lobstering and lighthouse-tending era. Designed in the 1990s by Hylan & Brown Boatbuilders in Brooklin, Maine, it updates the traditional form with lightweight glued-lapstrake plywood construction for easier building, reduced weight, and low maintenance, while preserving the elegant wineglass transom, fine entry, and seaworthy lines. The 15' variant stretches the hull for added capacity without altering the beam or core proportions, making it ideal for family outings, beach launching, or as a versatile yacht tender. Plans are beginner-friendly, with full-size patterns to skip lofting, and it's often built by amateurs or small shops like Marshview Boatworks or Ballentine's Boat Shop. Over 100 have been built since inception, prized for blending nostalgia with practical performance in protected waters.
