Bayfield 40 Ketch/Cutter

Description

The Bayfield 40 (also known as the Bayfield 40 Ketch or Cutter Ketch) is a Canadian blue water cruising sailboat designed by renowned naval architect Ted Gozzard and built by Bayfield Boat Yard Ltd. in Clinton, Ontario, from 1982 to 1988. Only about 30–40 hulls were produced, making it a rare and sought-after model in the Bayfield lineup, which emphasizes traditional aesthetics and liveaboard comfort. The staysail ketch rig (with cutter forward) features aluminum spars, a clipper bow with bowsprit, and a raised counter transom, providing versatile sail handling for short-handed or family crews (4–6 people). It's celebrated for its heavy displacement, long keel, and spacious interior, ideal for extended coastal or offshore passages (e.g., to the Bahamas or transatlantic with preparation), though it's not a high-performance racer (PHRF ~180–200).

Disclaimer. Boats are not all the same -- even when produced in the same factory of the same model. Sailrite does its best to publish accurate dimensions, but we often find it worthwhile to have our customers measure their boats carefully before we produce kits for them. You should take the same precautions, especially when the data is not from Sailrite.
