Balboa 27 (8.2)
Description
The Balboa 27 (also known as the Balboa 27 8.2, reflecting its 8.2m length on deck) is an American trailerable coastal cruiser designed by acclaimed naval architect Lyle C. Hess (famous for pocket cruisers like the Balboa 20 and 26) and built by Coastal Recreation Inc. in Newport Beach, California, starting in 1976. Approximately 100–200 hulls were produced until around 1981, making it a relatively uncommon but appreciated model in the Balboa lineup. An evolution of the earlier Balboa 26, it incorporates a slightly stretched hull for improved accommodations while retaining the swing keel for shallow-water access and trailering (rigged weight around 4,500–5,000 lb., towable by a mid-size vehicle). The masthead sloop rig and balanced design emphasize simplicity and seaworthiness for family daysailing, club racing, or short coastal passages, suitable for short-handed crews (2–4 people).
