Auklet

Description

The Auklet is a compact, glued lapstrake plywood dinghy designed by renowned Scottish naval architect Iain Oughtred, known for his elegant wooden small craft that blend traditional aesthetics with modern plywood construction techniques. Introduced in the early 2000s, the Auklet serves primarily as a versatile yacht tender, daysailer, or rowing boat, emphasizing simplicity, portability, and seaworthiness for sheltered waters. At just over 7 feet, it's ideal for solo use or as a family tender, capable of sailing, rowing, or motoring with a small outboard. Its lapstrake (clinker) hull provides a smooth ride and visual appeal, while the lightweight design (built from two 4x8 ft plywood sheets) makes it trailerable and easy to store. Oughtred's plans include multiple rig options, allowing customization for sail, oar, or power. It's praised for its balance and ease of build, with skill level rated basic to intermediate—no lofting required.

Custom sail calculations are not possible for this boat as no I, J, P and E dimensions are available.
