Allied XL 2
Description
The Allied XL-2 (also known as the Allied XL-2 42 or XL2 42) is a classic American-built fiberglass sailboat designed by the renowned firm Sparkman & Stephens. Produced by the Allied Boat Company in Catskill, New York, from approximately 1969 to 1982, only about 28 hulls were built, making it a rare and sought-after bluewater cruiser. It's celebrated for its elegant CCA-era (Cruising Club of America) lines—long overhangs, gentle sheer, and narrow beam—that give it a timeless, graceful appearance often compared to the Hinckley Bermuda 40. Despite its dainty looks, the XL-2 was overbuilt for serious offshore work, aligning with Allied's motto: "She’ll cross an ocean if you will." The company had a strong reputation for rugged boats (e.g., the Seawind models that completed early fiberglass circumnavigations). It was offered in sloop or yawl rig configurations, with some having a full keel and others a keel-centerboard setup.
