Albin Cumulus 28
Description
The Albin Cumulus (also known as the Cumulus 28) is a classic Swedish cruiser-racer sailboat designed by renowned naval architect Peter Norlin. Introduced in 1978, it was built by Albin Marine AB in Sweden (primarily at their Visby factory) until 1985, with a total production run of approximately 567 units. Some later examples were constructed in Taiwan under license. This 28-foot fractional sloop was developed as a successor to smaller Albin models like the Vega, emphasizing a balance of racing performance and coastal cruising capability. It's particularly well-suited for choppy waters like the Baltic and North Seas, with a robust fiberglass construction and a design that prioritizes stability and ease of handling. The boat's fractional rig allows for a more responsive sail plan, making it forgiving for single-handing while still competitive in club races. Norlin, known for IOR-influenced designs, crafted the Cumulus with a fin keel and transom-hung rudder for agile maneuvering, though it's not a full blue water vessel—more of a coastal performer with moderate offshore potential.
