Description
The 20' Catboat Joy is a classic sailboat designed by Jay Benford of the Benford Design Group in 1976, inspired by a commission from Al Lewis. It’s a compact, traditionally styled catboat known for its beefy, beamy keelboat design, ideal for coastal cruising in areas like the Columbia River or Puget Sound. Fiberglass monohull with a fixed keel (optional twin bilge keels considered). A mold was created from the original hull built for Al Lewis, and several fiberglass hulls were produced; at least one was built in wood. The design features a plumb or canoe bow, round counter-stern or fantail, and significant sheer and tumblehome for a classic aesthetic. Ferrocement or steel construction was also possible. Introduced in 1976; limited production. A mold was created for fiberglass hulls, and several sisterships were built, but exact numbers are unclear. No longer in production.
